Memories

Hopefully a growing collection of memories from various activities related to my leather working.

Wonderful gifts (2018)

I had the privilege of serving as the Baron of the Rhydderich Hael for three years. When I stepped down my good friend Éadaoin Gaelach Rua created two gifts for me (and Miriel). The first was a wooden plaque, carved by her hand. The words are by her and the heraldry is my old heraldry from our time together in Dagorhir where we met many years ago.

In addition to that being the exceptional Bard she is, she also wrote and performed this original song.

The Years of Magnus & Miriel

Éadaoin Gaelach Rua

Deep in the Hael, there lives a pair:
Miriel and Magnus, both strong and fair.
But listen not to my words alone,
Let their actions set the tone.
The Smiling Dragon looks over all,
So M and M did heed its call.
   Onward, they ever lead,
Such spirit in word and deed.

Miriel’s giggling is always there,
E’en when she’s getting stabbed everywhere.
Now hear the tale of her kidneys three:
A loving, dysfunctional family.
Around her, you can’t help but smile,
This Hound and mother of grand style,
But mix her drinks and sappy songs,
And she’ll cry a river all night long.

Great cooking, painting, and tooling gifts,
Our Magnus is deceptive swift.
O’er fields, he suddenly races
To give to his Love sweet embraces.
   Rife with masculinity
As flick his wrist and prance does he.
Rest assured, ‘fore Court is through:
Sanctions for you, and you, and you!

So bring them incense, gold, and myrrh…
Just kidding: drug trade would cause a stir.
But please, to them, your homage give
And the noble creed they live.
They’ve taught me strength without and within,
Proven their honesty time and again,
Selfless servants who seek to find
The best of everyone in kind.

For me, the Wardrobe will never close,
But we can’t go back, so on, life goes.
For all adventure that lies ahead,
Their lessons have me preparéd.
   Whate’er the Barony’s future holds,
From gorgeous summers to winter colds,
   Let us all remember well
The years of Magnus and Miriel,

The years of Magnus and Miriel.

Relics in memory of a lost friend (2018)

At the Rhydderich Hael Investiture Her Excellency and I handed out several medallions to a select group of people. The story originates with our good friend THL Wolfgang Starcke. At one of our many events when the time came to set up the Baronial thrones we discovered that some of the wooden pegs had gone missing. Wolfgang made his way into the woods and collected sticks that he broke into pieces and used as pegs so the thrones could be assembled. To me this simple act of service exemplified what service means in the Society. How small acts of service support everything that we do and stand for. As I prepared to step down I discovered that several of these small sticks remained in the thrones bags. It was then I decided that these should be made into relics to honor Wolfgang and the service he gave. Her Excellency and I each hand out three to people we thought deserving. I do not post this to take credit for the idea of the making of the relics, but to spread the inspiration of it to people who could not attend court to see it personally. The people honored include:

  • Lord Joe the Silent
  • Mistress Geirny Thoryrimsdottir
  • THL Zofia Kowalewska
  • The Down Family (Lord Chebe, Lady Natsu, & Lady Kaido)
  • Lady Thalia Papillon
  • Baron Rhiannon Elandris

Thank you all for your service.

Magnus de Lyons

Harvest in the Hael, November 2017

A couple shots of my class on making leather award medallions taught at Harvest in the Hael, November 2017, Barony of The Rhyderrich Hael (Held in the Canton of Beu Fleuve).

Three Ravens (2017)

I had the pleasure of teaching a class on making leather award medallions. Each teacher received one of these commemorative scrolls. A nice touch to an already wonderful day.
